We have a fully functioning kitchen on our school site, where the children are served by BANES catering staff.
The lunch menu is put together by our School cook, with discussions with School Council and our SNAG group. It is made according to national nutritional standards and in accordance with BANES Catering Services. The School Council are consulted about menu choices and have an impact on any changes made. Vegetarian and gluten free options are of a good standard. Printed copies of the menu are distributed to parents via the school.
The cost of a meal is £2.60 per day/£13 per week. Payment is due in advance and should be made via ParentPay on the first Monday of each week or each Term. (Payments can be made weekly or you can pay for a term in advance if you prefer). Please remember to check your ParentPay account on a regular basis to make sure your payments are up to date, you can also setup balance alert. Children in Reception up to Year 2 get free school meals through the government policy Universal Free School Meals (UFSM).
Children need to have packed lunches or school dinners for a whole week at a time, but please speak to the school office if this is a problem.
If your child is having packed lunches, please ensure that their lunchbox is clearly labelled with their name and class. Remember to pack teaspoons for yoghurt, etc as dining room staff cannot look after these individual needs. Any packaging from a child’s packed lunch will be returned home and not thrown away at school. During the summer terms, when weather permits, children taking packed lunches can eat outside on a rota basis, in year groups.
Children may bring in a piece of fruit to eat during break time. For children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, a piece of fruit or vegetable is provided free as part of the government’s School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme.
Children are encouraged to bring water to school, to drink during the day. There are also water fountains around the school, including in the playground, to supplement the children’s own supplies. Still drinks other than water may be brought as part of a packed lunch but must be in unbreakable containers (no cans, bottles or flasks with glass liners please). Please do not send children with fizzy drinks.
Milk is provided free of charge to children under five. Parents who wish their children to have milk after this are able to order milk for their children to drink at break time. Details can be obtained from the school office.
Nuts, strawberries or sweets must not be provided as part of a meal, snack or for consumption at any other time during the day. There are children attending school for whom contact with nut; nut-based or strawberry products would cause a serious allergic reaction. The only occasion when sweets are permitted is as a class treat brought from home on a child’s birthday, when they are distributed at the end of the school day.
St Stephen' s was awarded The Healthy Schools Certificate. This builds on National Healthy Schools Status (NHSS) which we achieved in 2006 and have maintained since. The Healthy Schools programme is a joint initiative between the Department for Education and Department of Health to promote a whole school/whole child approach to health. It has been tailored and improved so that it meets the health priorities and needs of children and young people in Bath and North East Somerset.

SNAG stands for School Nutrition Action Group and is the official name given to similar food committees in primary and secondary schools all over the country. The aim of these committees is to look at all food provided in schools, take action to improve it and encourage healthy eating.
The St Stephen’s SNAG was established in 2005. All areas of the school community, including catering staff, teachers and parents are represented on the committee, which generally meets once a term.
The work of the committee in the past has included
organizing tasting sessions of school dinners to assess the quality of food on offer.
giving the children the opportunity through surveys and School Council to voice their opinions and preferences on school meals and have fed this information back to the catering service.
working to improve the dining room environment and the dining experience for all the children, to make their lunchtime as pleasurable as possible. In June 2010, new plates and cups were purchased to replace the old airline-style trays. For KS2, a system was introduced so dinner children are able to sit with children having packed lunches.
organizing the annual ‘Big Picnic’ in the summer term, when the whole school eats lunch together outside. School dinner children are given a specially prepared meal that can be served outside.
We at St Stephen's Primary School are aware that keeping our staff members hydrated will aid them to perform at their very best throughout the work day. As a result, we decided to invest in water coolers from AquAid – our unique relationship with AquAid has also given our company the opportunity to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Our decision to install a water cooler from AquAid means that for each one of the machines that we have, we have donated £20 per year per cooler to The Africa Trust.
